New 2013 Volkswagen Passat Overview
A year removed from its 2012 makeover, the 2013 Volkswagen Passat continues to offer exceptional value in the midsize segment.
In a country where more midsize cars are sold than any other class of vehicle, Volkswagen needed the Passat to be a hit and thankfully it delivered. Our friends at Cars.com even named the 2012 version their Car of the Year.
The Passat’s styling is very much in line with the rest of the fleet and closest to the Jetta compact, with very clean (and straight) lines that run along the sides of the car. 16-inch wheels are standard (17- and 18-inch wheels are also available), while a power moonroof and foglights are optional.
There are three different engine options offered with the Passat, two gasoline and one efficient diesel, each with unique transmission pairings. The base engine is a 170-horsepower, 2.5-liter five-cylinder that is offered with a five-speed manual or a six-speed automatic. Next up is the diesel, a 140-horsepower, 2.0-liter four-cylinder that produces 236 pounds-feet of torque and is mated to a six-speed manual or automatic. Offering the most power is the 280-horsepower, 3.6-liter V-6 that gets a six-speed dual-clutch automatic.
Fuel economy ratings with the gas engines are middling for the class, 22 mpg in the city and 31-32 mpg on the highway with the base engine, and 20/28 mpg city/highway with the V-6. But the diesel engine blows away these ratings and the non-hybrid competition, topping out at 31/43 mpg city/highway with the manual transmission (the automatic returns 30/40 mpg city/highway).
The Passat got some additional length during its redesign and those added inches help to make the Passat one of the roomiest midsize sedans on the road today with 39.1 inches of rear leg room. Standard features include air conditioning, cruise control, Bluetooth connectivity, a 60/40-split folding rear seat, and an auxiliary audio input. The Passat also offers a long list of available comfort/technology options such as dual-zone automatic climate control, leather upholstery, navigation system, iPod connectivity, and heated front seats.
For its performance in crash test, the 2013 Passat earned both a Top Safety Pick award from the IIIHS and a full five-star rating from the NHTSA. Standard safety features include antilock brakes, an electronic stability system, and six airbags.
