New 2013 Lexus LS 460 Overview
The 2013 Lexus LS 460 gets more than a mild refresh for the 2013 model year, sporting a brand new look inside and out, as well as a new emphasis on driver engagement and a new F Sport trim level.
The LS 460 is part of Lexus’ range topping LS-Class of sedans and as the flagship model competes with cars like the Mercedes-Benz S-Class and the BMW 7-series (talk about friends in high places). Nobody could ever discount the LS 460’s luxury chops, but to compete on equal footing with cars of that caliber Lexus had to ratchet up the LS 460’s looks and driving dynamics. Thankfully, it has done both.
This shift in philosophy is immediately apparent from the new exterior. An anonymous exterior has been replaced by a more aggressive, sharply angled modern appearance that breathes new life into the LS 460’s lungs. Up front is a large version of Lexus corporate, spindle grille flanked by sweeping xenon HID headlamps. The hood and sides feature detailed sculpting and plenty of character lines; this is not a car that glides by so much as one that looks back at you as if to say, “What are you looking at?” The LS 460 is also sold in a long-wheelbase version (LS 460 L) that offers extra rear seat room. LS 460 F Sport models add a few exterior cues such as a mesh grille and larger air openings up front.
Under the hood of the 2013 LS 460 you’ll find the same engine, but numerous mechanical upgrades contribute to its newly found driving spirit. Power comes from a 4.6-liter V-8 that produces 386-horsepower (an increase of six) and 367 pounds-feet of torque in rear-wheel drive models, or 360-horsepower and 347 pounds-feet of torque in the optional all-wheel drive versions. An eight-speed automatic is the only transmission option. The suspension has been upgraded and stiffened with new shocks to decrease body roll and increase feel. F Sport models add a lowered air suspension, Brembo brakes, and a limited slip diff for rear-wheel drive models. Fuel economy checks in at 16/24 mpg city/highway, with all-wheel drive models losing 1 mpg on the highway.
Inside, the LS 460 impresses with plenty of technology and comfort. The most noticeable interior piece is the new 12.3-inch screen that is perched atop the center console and is used to display audio system info, as well as directions from the standard navigation system. Befitting a flagship carrying luxury sedan, there is plenty in the way of standard and optional equipment. HD radio, USB/iPod port, Bluetooth connectivity, dual-zone automatic climate control, powered front seats, and Lexus’ Enform Apps suite are standard. Options include quad-zone automatic climate control, heated front and rear seats, powered rear sunshade, a Blu-ray backseat entertainment system, and Mark Levinson premium stereo. Long wheelbase models offer an Executive Class Seating Package, which includes a reclining right-rear seat with ottoman and massage functions, a center console with a tray table, rear climate/audio controls, and a drink cooler.
There are also plenty of standard safety features, including a backup camera, eight airbags, antilock brakes, and an electronic stability system. Automatic high-beams, rear side-impact airbags, and a blind spot warning system are optional.
