New 2013 Kia Sportage Overview
The Sportage was among the first models to show off Kia’s new styling language, which transformed the brand from one with bland, staid designs to one that stood out among competitors. For 2013, Kia keeps the sharp styling of its five-passenger crossover and adds just few standard features. All four models now come with power folding side mirrors, LED accent lighting and sun visor extension.
Before this version, the Sportage looked like just about every other boxy, small crossover. Kia pretty much tore up those designs and turned the exterior into a much more stylish, cohesive look. The popular rising beltline complimented by a sloping roofline gives the 2013 Sportage a sleek appearance without appearing too soft. Headlights and grille combine in an element that sweeps back along the fenders. Heated side mirrors with integrated turn signals fog lights and a rear spoiler are available.
Kia’s standard engine for three Sportage models is a 176-horsepower, 2.4-liter, inline-four cylinder developing 168 pounds feet of torque and paired with a six-speed manual gearbox or a six-speed automatic transmission with a manual shift mode. The top Sportage model comes with a 260-horsepower, turbocharged, 2.0-liter, inline-four cylinder engine mated to the six-speed automatic sending power to either the front or all four wheels. The top three models only come with the automatic and offer optional AWD.
The standard four-cylinder/manual transmission combination returns EPA-estimated fuel economy of 21 mpg in the city and 29 mpg on the highway, which rises to 22/32 mpg city/highway with the automatic. All-wheel drive models with the 2.4-liter and automatic get 21/28 mpg city/highway. Turbocharged 2.0-liter the ratings come in at 22/29 mpg city/highway with FWD, and 21/26 mpg city/highway with AWD.
Among the Sportage’s notable standard features are an audio system with satellite radio, Bluetooth audio streaming, and a USB port, auto-down power windows, tilt steering wheel, and 60/40 split rear seat. Option highlights include premium audio with HD radio and the Uvo voice-activated information and entertainment system, dual automatic climate control, automatic headlights, and a cooled glove box.
Safety features found on all Sportage models include electronic stability and traction control, antilock brakes with emergency braking assist and electronic brake-force distribution, hill-start assist, and downhill brake control, which helps control descent speed. Sportage features six airbags: dual-stage front, front side-impact and side-curtains. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety named the Sportage a 2012 Top Safety Pick.
