New 2014 Jeep Compass Overview

One of the two compact crossovers in Jeep’s lineup, the 2014 Jeep Compass gets a few updates for the new model year and remains just as at home on the street as it is off-road.
The Compass was redesigned in 2011 to look like a miniaturized version of the larger Grand Cherokee with sleek lines and modern headlamps. For 2014, the Compass also gets a few new iterations of Jeep’s classic seven-line front grille and updated light fixtures. Sixteen-inch alloy wheels are standard on the 2014 Compass, but 18-inchers are optional on higher trims. Other exterior options include chrome roof racks, certain body-colored trim pieces, and a sunroof.
The 2014 Compass retains its two engine options but adds a new six-speed automatic to the list of available transmissions. The base engine is a 158-horsepower, 2.0-liter four-cylinder with 141 pounds-feet of torque, while those wanting a more powerful option turn to a 172-horsepower, 2.4-liter four-cylinder with 165 pounds-feet of torque. A five-speed manual transmission is standard with the Compass Sport, but the new six-speed automatic should replace the CVT as the most popular transmission options offering a more pleasant driving experience. Jeep hasn’t released official fuel economy numbers for the new transmission but they have said there shouldn’t be a drop-off between the two. The Compass comes with standard front-wheel drive, but can also be a formidable off-roader with two optional four-wheel drive systems, the second of which (Freedom-Drive II) turns the Compass into a trail-rated off-roader. Freedom-Drive II still uses the CVT for its higher final drive ratio. Depending on engine/drivetrain combination, the Compass will return between 20-23 mpg in the city and 23-30 mpg on the highway.
Jeep has stepped up when it comes to the interior quality of its vehicles and the 2014 Compass is further evidence of this with good fit and finish and greater use of soft-touch materials. For 2014, the Compass adds chrome accents, an updated instrument panel, and a vinyl-wrapped center armrest. Each Compass comes standard with cloth seats, but leather is available. All Compasses feature air conditioning, an audio system w/ MP3 connectivity, tilt-adjustable steering wheel, and 60/40 split-folding rear seats. Options are extensive and include a premium sound system, navigation system, and power-adjustable heated seats.
The 2014 Jeep Compass gets several standard safety features. Four airbags, antilock disc brakes, traction control, a steel roll cage, and active roll avoidance are all standard. Hill-descent assist is optional which helps keep the car in control on steep grades.
