New 2013 Ford Escape Overview
The name is the same, but everything else has changed for the 2013 Ford Escape. One of Ford’s bestselling models, the Escape gets a complete makeover from the ground up for 2013, the first full redesign for the model since it debuted in 2001. Compared to the outgoing model, the new Escape offers more cargo space, better fuel economy, and several new tech features.
Gone is the rugged, truck-like appearance of the previous model. The new 2013 Escape features styling that screams crossover, with a sleeker look all around and a windshield that sweeps back sharply. Blacked out B and C pillars also give the windows a “wraparound” appearance that’s come into popularity of late (also seen on the larger Explorer). If you look at the front, you’ll see plenty of similarities with a few of the passenger cars in Ford’s lineup, like the Focus and Fiesta.
The 2013 Escape’s improved fuel economy can be traced back to its three new engine options. The base engine, which is found in the S trim, is an upgraded version of last year’s base engine and the 2.5-liter four-cylinder now produces 168-horsepower. More exciting are the two brand-new Ecoboost engine options for the Escape. The first is an efficient 173-horsepower, turbocharged 1.6-liter four-cylinder that yields the best fuel economy of the three but also offers more power than the base engine. Instead of a V-6 engine option, the Escape now offers a 237-horsepower, turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder which is more fuel efficient than the larger, outgoing engine. Front-wheel drive is standard and all-wheel drive is optional. The only transmission option is a six-speed automatic.
Fuel economy ratings vary depending on engine/drivetrain choices. The base engine returns 22/31 mpg city/highway and is only available with front-wheel drive. The most efficient engine, the 1.6-liter Ecoboost, gets 23/33 mpg city/highway with FWD, 22/30 with AWD. For the best mix of power and fuel economy the larger 2.0-liter Ecoboost engine offers 22/30 mpg city/highway with FWD, and 21/28 with AWD – numbers that eclipse and match the maximum highway fuel economy from last year’s model.
The Escape’s interior was the place where it was aging the most, but the redesigned interior fixes that problem handily. It’s a big upgrade over the previous interior, with updated materials and styling. There are still a few plastic trim pieces around, but that’s to be expected in this segment/price range and we’re happy to find that most of the touch points are covered in nicer materials. Standard features include air conditioning, auxiliary audio input jack, and a six-speaker stereo.
There are also many new features to be found all over the 2013 Escape, including a hands-free, powered rear liftgate. If you have the optional intelligent key in your pocket, you can approach the rear of the Escape and open the liftgate simply by kicking your foot under a sensor that’s located beneath the rear bumper. So even if your arms are full of packages, you can easily open the Escape to put them away. Other tech options include Ford’s SYNC connectivity system with Bluetooth, MyFord Touch which has been updated for easier use, and an active park assist system which will steer the Escape into parallel parking spaces.
Safety features include antilock brakes, electronic stability system, and a full complement of airbags. The side airbags have been updated and now cover the hip area as well as the torso.
